My preference is to go to the Vietnamese embassy or consulate in an Asian country (generally I do this in Thailand) and get the visa there. I have also used the services of a Thai travel agent to handle the process since I hate to wait in line and would rather pay a visa handling fee!

Getting There

From Outside Asia

Several North American airlines (United and American so far) have started flights to Vietnam via Japanese and Hong Kong gateways. You can find out if your airline (or a codeshare partner) flies to Vietnam by going direct to the airline's website. Several major European airlines, including Lufthansa and Air France, serve Vietnam, as do most major Asian airlines. The long-distance cruise ships don't make calls in major Vietnamese ports, but that is also likely to change in the next year or two.
